Brilliant 3 Draft Picks Have Kansas City Chiefs Primed for Another Super Bowl…

[The rich get richer is the saying people should be echoing after watching the Kansas City Chiefs use the first four rounds of the draft to restock a cupboard that wasn’t even nearly empty. It is obvious that general manager Brett Veach isn’t satisfied with back-to-back Super Bowl wins and is looking to make the Chiefs the first three-peat champions in NFL history. Although they didn’t lose much in free agency — and, in fact, extended their best offensive player not named Patrick Mahomes (Travis Kelce) — they still had some boxes to check.

Having Mahomes at quarterback will always keep the offense rolling, but they became a bit one-dimensional last season, with Kelce being their only big option in the pass game. Rashee Rice looked to be a middle-round find in last year’s draft, but his career has hit a major speed bump this offseason. They also let starting left tackle Donovan Smith walk in free agency (although he is still available and a good fit for possibly another team). Kelce, although still a threat, is not immortal and has never been one of the league’s top blockers at tight end.

The Chiefs were able to correct these issues with their first three draft picks, even getting two of their biggest Super Bowl rivals (the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers) to do business with them in order to get it done. The Chiefs offense has been lacking in the speed category since trading away Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. They filled that need this offseason. Worthy ran a 4,21-second 40-yard dash at the combine. He is automatically one of the fastest players in the NFL without playing a snap. Now his frame is slight, at 6’1” and 172 pounds, but we’ve seen this size of wide receiver survive in the NFL. Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith is a great recent example.

This was actually a player I had pegged for the San Francisco 49ers at his exact draft spot (Round 2, pick 63). Then the Chiefs talked 49ers general manager John Lynch into trading out and the Chiefs drafted him. At 6’6” and 329 pounds, Suamataia is a large individual. He may or may not start his rookie season, but he is intelligent and although his run block rate was low in college (52.9%), his athleticism is off the charts.

His RAS rating came out at 9.38, showing he has the physical prowess to be Mahomes’ blindside protector for the next decade. With good coaching, this probable first-year swing tackle will earn dividends for the Chiefs’ organization for years to come.

When you see a 6’6” 249-pound tight end line up as an H-Back, you know he has athleticism. Then you watch him high point a seam route or outrun the opponent’s safeties, you just have to say, “wow”. That’s Wiley. Although he isn’t known for his blocking skills, he reminds me a lot of a mixture of Kelce lining up in the slot or out wide and George Kittle catching passes out of the backfield.

I know the Chiefs also added free agent Irv Smith Jr., but I expect Wiley to pass him on the depth chart. The idea of having both Wiley and Kelce on the field at the same time with Brown and Worthy lined up wide must have Mahomes just giggling and opposing defensive coaches losing their hair.

If Worthy and free agent signing Marquis Brown both earn starting roles with the Chiefs, opponents better up their speed training for their secondaries. I wouldn’t expect huge numbers from Worthy as a rookie, but with these two roadrunners stretching the defense, I’d be selecting Kelce for your fantasy football teams, because he is going to be wide-open in the middle of the field all season. The fact that the Bills traded back to allow the Chiefs to make this draft selection is a bit mind-boggling.
